Get a Full Day of 1:1 Writing Support

Make substantial progress on your draft with back-and-forth support from me. You'll talk to me (via voice or text) and we'll make your draft AWESOOOOOMME—or at least less sucky ;)

Who is this for?

Anyone who has previously hired me to review a draft and now wants ongoing feedback to get it into tiptop super ass-kicking shape.

Who is this NOT for?

  • Anyone who has not yet received written notes from me on their draft. (If that's you and you need help with your writing, hire me for a draft review first)
  • Anyone who expects me to write for them (sorry, but this is all about improving your own writing skills and for that you need to write yourself).

How does it work?

Throughout a period of 24 hours, starting from the date and time of our appointment (which you'll get to choose from a calendar), you get a hotline to me to ask any questions you may have about the written notes I've given you as well as any other specific questions you may have about writing and the draft you're working on.

Hotline? Yes, hotline. But we won't use the red phone in the President's Oval Office. We'll use something better: the Voxer Walkie-Talkie Messenger app.

For instance, if you choose next Monday 8 AM for our one-on-one day of Voxer to start, you'll get to send me Voxer messages at any time from Monday 8 AM until Tuesday 8 AM.

What do I need for the coaching session?

  • The Voxer app.
  • An Internet connection.
  • A PDF version of your draft.
  • The written feedback you obtained from me (if you don't have this, hire me for a draft review first)
  • Some time to work on your draft.

Why Voxer?

One thing that often gets in the way of getting one-on-one support and help is finding big chunks of time that work well for both partners.

But with Voxer this is not a problem. We won't even attempt to find an hour or two (or three!) that works well for the two of us.

Why? Because Voxer allows easy and convenient asynchronous communication.

In other words, just like with WhatsApp, Facebook messenger, or Twitter DMs, you can shoot me a message whenever it's convenient for you and I, in turn, can reply whenever I have a spare moment.

Why not a one-on-one Zoom call?

Zoom calls are a synchronous communication method, which means we need to coordinate to talk to each other at the exact same time.

This, however, has several problems:

  1. We might be in different time zones, which means that when it's convenient for me, it might be in the middle of the night for you and vice versa.
  2. If you want to pick my brain for two hours, you need to carve out a full two hours out of your busy day—and I need to do the same.
  3. If you paid for a one hour Zoom call, and two hours after we finished the call you have a new question, you will have to book another call.
  4. If I have just given you a long detailed answer over Zoom, you have no convenient way to listen to it again at a later time.
  5. With Zoom you need to find a quiet place where you can talk undisturbed for a lengthy period of time.
  6. If one of us has a bad Internet connection, our Zoom call might be a frustrating experience full of lag and glitches.
  7. On a Zoom call, you have to worry about how you look—unless you turn off the camera, in which case you make me awkwardly talk to a blank screen.
  8. A long Zoom session can be draining and by the end of it both you and I may have too much brain fog to resolve any issues with your draft in the best way possible.

With Voxer, on the other hand, communication rocks!

  1. You can send me a message at any time within the 24 hours that you've booked. You don't have to worry about what time it is wherever I happen to be.
  2. You don't need to carve out a lengthy period of time to talk to me and it doesn't matter if you have a few other things going on. Whenever you have a spare moment within the 24 hours you've booked, just send me a voice or text message and I'll reply as soon as I can.
  3. With Voxer, you can easily re-read or re-listen to any message I've sent you.
  4. With Voxer, you can send me a message when you're stuck in traffic, waiting in line at the grocery store, or whenever you have a free moment throughout the day and a question pops into your head.
  5. If you're in a noisy environment or a place where you can't talk (like a funeral?) you can simply send me text messages instead of voice messages.
  6. Even if you have a spotty Internet connection, Voxer usually works fine.
  7. If you don't want to be disturbed by my messages because you are at work or sleeping, all you have to do is silence Voxer's notifications on your phone.
  8. Voxer allows you to listen to my voice messages at 2x, 3x, or even 4x speed. This is allows you to quickly re-listen to something I said before.
  9. If you need my input on a particular section of a draft you're working on, you can simply snap a picture of it with Voxer, send it to me, and then ask your question.
  10. You can take plenty of rest, even naps, between our back-and-forth Voxer messages, ensuring that you'll be rested well enough to make the most of our interactions.

Is Voxer free?

Voxer has various paid plans, but the free version does everything we need.

Do I need to stay glued to my phone for the full 24 hours?

C'mon, I know you already are ;)

But no. Take breaks, take a nap, do some work, go for a walk, feed your dog, go grocery shopping, take a shower, etc. If I sent you a message in-between, it'll be waiting for you within the Voxer app :)

How quickly can I expect you to answer my messages?

I'll often reply within minutes—sometimes seconds. But depending on what's going on in my busy day, it might take me an hour or two. And if it's bedtime where I live, you might have to wait a whole bunch of hours until I'm awake again and ready to work.

What's your availability? When can I book a full day of Voxer with you?

You'll first have to fill out and submit an application form to make sure you're not trying to get a hotline to me while I'm in the middle of the Amazon jungle or trecking the Himalayas.

But once you've submitted your application and I've accepted, you'll get to choose the date and time when our day of Voxer starts.

If you want to preview my availability, you can check out my calendar here. You'll see what days I'm available on and if you click on a particular day, you'll see the hours I'm most likely to respond quickly.

Is there a particular time of day you recommend I should choose for the day of Voxer to start?

Yes. If you want quick and continuous feedback from the start, be aware of when I'm offline.

For instance, let's assume your time zone is Eastern Time (US) while my time zone is Central European Time. That means when it's 2 AM for you, it will be 8 AM for me:

On the other hand, when it's 14h (2 PM) for you, it will be 20h (8 PM) for me and I'll be just about to go offline.

So if you choose the day of Voxer to start at 14h your time and start sending me messages, I will have just gone offline and you probably won't hear back from me until it's around 2 AM your time.

So it's probably better for you if you choose the day of Voxer to start around 9 AM your time, which will be 15h (3 PM) my time and will give us a full 5 hours of overlap to communicate back and forth before I'm offline again.

For another example, let's assume you're in Brisbane Australia and I'm still in central Europe. Then you'll see that there is a gap between 4 AM your time and 16h (4 PM) your time. That's the time I'm offline:

So in this particular case the best start time for the day of Voxer would probably be 16h (4 PM) your time, which would be 8 AM my time.

To sum up, just remember to choose a start time that doesn't coincide with the time when I'm just about to go offline.

Otherwise, you'll have to wait a whole bunch of hours until I send you my first reply.

What if I need to reschedule?

No problem. After paying, you'll be able to make an appointment using a calendar. Once you've done that, you'll get an email confirming our appointment that looks like this and that includes a rescheduling link:

Just use that link to reschedule for another day and time when you want our 24 hours of Voxer to start.

If I'm not happy with your coaching, can I get a refund?

I'll do my best to ensure you'll be happy. That said, you're paying for my time and lost time is sadly the one thing none of us can get back. So I'll only refund you if on the day of our appointment I didn't show up to provide you guidance through Voxer.

Can I buy a day of Voxer support more than once?

Sure! If you need another day of help with your draft, you can simply buy another 24 hours of Voxer right here on this page.

HOWEVER, if it's a draft for a new article I have not yet given you any written feedback on, hire me to review your new draft first.

Can I book a half day or quarter day instead of a full day?

Sorry, no. A full 24 hours gives us plenty of time for back-and-forth messages, regardless of when you or I sleep, eat, work, etc.

If I were to offer less time, we lose much of the advantage of asynchronous communication and we would have to coordinate more tightly again, which is really hard to do given that I'm busy, you're busy, and I might very well be on the other side of the planet.

What if after the 24 hours my draft still needs more work?

Then you can book another day of Voxer with me or, if you prefer, revise your draft and then hire me to take another look at it and provide you with more written feedback.

What if you've resolved all the questions I had about my draft way before the 24 hours are over?

Then we should virtually high-five each other! And once we've done that, you can use the extra time to ask me more general questions if you want. See below.

Can I ask you other questions besides questions directly related to my draft?

Sure. I'm here to help you with your draft and to act as a sounding board and accountability buddy. But if you also have more general questions related to online writing, blogging, online marketing, running email lists, growing an audience, monetizing your writing, setting up a web presence, making it on specific platforms like Medium, Substack, ConvertKit, etc, I'm happy to help as best I can :)

Do I retain all copyright and can I publish the draft that's been improved with your help?

Yes. You can publish it on Medium, your blog, your mom's fridge, or wherever else you want. The draft is all yours and you can do with it whatever you want.

As to the copyright, since I will only provide you with guidance and help, but not write any words for you, the copyright remains all yours :)

If I publish my draft, do I have to acknowledge your help?

No, but if you do, you'll make me happy :)

I'm not 100% fluent in English, do you speak any other languages?

I also speak Spanish, Catalan, and German. So if you prefer, you can talk to me in any of those languages.

I'm not sure if this is right for me. What should I do?

No problem. Just get in touch with me and tell me what you're worried about. I'll get back to you :)

I have one more question before I book!

Again, just get in touch with me and ask away. I'll get back to you :)

Wait! How much does a day of 1:1 support with the amazing David B. Clear cost?

It currently costs USD $74.99.

And what am I getting again?

You are getting full access to me, a hugely popular writer on Medium who happens to have a PhD and who knows how to enchant audiences.

Specifically, you'll be able to ask me (via voice or text messages) any questions you want about your draft or online writing in general.

What's more, you'll have a full 24 hours to send me as many messages as you want.

Alright, I'm interested! How do I proceed?

Awesome! Here's how it works:

Step 1

Make sure you've read through the above questions and answers.

Step 2

Upload the current version of your draft here.

Step 3

Fill out the application form in the next section and hit submit.

After submission, you'll be shown a message explaining that your request to join my coaching service has been submitted.

Step 4

Give me some time to take a look at your draft, check your application, check my availability, and approve your request.

Step 5

If I'm available and approve your request, you'll receive an email informing you that you're in.

The email will contain a link to a page where you can proceed to make the payment, after which you'll get to make an appointment for our day of Voxer by choosing a date and time from my calendar.

Service Agreement

Okay, dear Buttercup, time to be serious for a moment. The following is an agreement between you and me to give us both peace of mind in case you hire me for a Day of Voxer.

For instance, if you make an appointment with me for next Tuesday and I don't show up, we want to make sure we've thought of this eventuality and that you'll get a refund if rescheduling doesn't work for you.

So please read the following terms carefully and make sure you agree with them before you proceed:

  1. Don't book a day of Voxer with me if you're not a fan of my writing and comics.
  2. Don't send me drafts longer than 4,000 words.
  3. Make sure Voxer works on your computer or phone.
  4. Feel free to use (or disregard) any of my suggested improvements.
  5. You can apply any of my suggested improvements and then use the revised draft commercially (e.g. publish it within the Medium Partner Program or a monetized blog).
  6. If you publish the improved draft, you don't have to acknowledge my contribution (although it will be appreciated).
  7. I will not write paragraphs or sections for you. I'll only provide suggestions and opinions.
  8. Don't share my feedback with other people. It's for you only.
  9. I cannot guarantee the success of the revised draft (e.g. whether the final article will go viral, be curated by Medium, accepted by a publication, etc.).
  10. I'll refund you only if I didn't provide you with my service, i.e., if on the day of our appointment I didn't respond to any of your messages and you don't want to reschedule for another day.
  11. No refunds in case you disagree with the amount or nature of my feedback.
  12. Don't take negative feedback personally. My comments may occasionally come across as curt or harsh, but that's only for efficiency's sake (i.e. so that I don't waste your money and time).
  13. During the 24 hours of feedback, I will not be available at all times (e.g., I have to eat and sleep).
  14. Once the 24 hours of Voxer are over, don't expect any more Voxer replies from me. If you want to continue the conversation, you'll have to purchase another day of support from me.
  15. You retain the full copyright on your draft and any revisions, even if you've improved it with my suggestions.
  16. Payment occurs in advance (USD $74.99 per day of Voxer).
